Washington Parish went along with Louisiana and the nation Tuesday in voting for Donald Trump for president. Trump collected 70 percent in Washington Parish, easily defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris as he won nationally.
On a statewide basis in Louisiana, Trump was also the big winner, taking 60 percent of the statewide votes.
In Franklinton, the hotly contested mayor's race was narrowly won by Darwin Sharp. He received 741 votes compared to the 730 votes received by incumbent Mayor Greg Route. These are complete but unofficial totals. 65 percent of eligible voters voted in the mayor's election.
Sharp is serving as a Franklinton alderman and his term as alderman will end in January, when he is sworn in as mayor. In addition to his service as alderman, he has also been a member of the parish police jury (forerunner to the parish council) and also served as a Justice of the Peace.
Five Franklinton aldermen will be elected soon to serve alongside the new mayor. The election for aldermen was pushed back to December 7 following the death of candidate Frankie Crosby, in accordance with state law. In the event that a run-off is needed in the alderman election, it will be held on January 7. Ten candidates are seeking the five seats available.
In Angie, Darryl Knight was elected Mayor, defeating Denise Robinson.
In Varnado, three aldermen were elected: Chris Jones, Kimberly Suzi Kennedy, and Dustin Sumrall.
