A long-delayed project to replace the Varnado Street bridge now has a completion date in sight.
The old bridge, located just to the east of Lee Street, was removed last year when the rebuilding/upgrading project began.
Initially, it was thought that a new bridge could be ready in a matter of months.
However, weather issues combined with the presence of utility lines created a lengthy and complicated delay. Lines owned by AT&T were in the construction area and they could not legally be moved by either the Town of Franklinton or the bridge contractor ----they could only be moved by AT&T, the owner.
Unfortunately, AT&T took its time in moving the lines, but finally it happened. Construction on the new bridge resumed in March, and the contractor expects the project to be completed in approximately six weeks.
The closure of Varnado Street at the bridge site has been an inconvenience, especially for people living in the East Acres subdivision, several nearby residents told The Era-Leader. But they were pleased to learn that the project is finally on its way to completion.
