Theresa Glenn, a secretary for Washington Parish Fire District #7, was booked into the Washington Parish Jail on Wednesday (Oct. 5) on charges related to unemployment insurance fraud.
A Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s report released in July of this year alleged that Mrs. Glenn received unemployment payments during the pandemic while she continued to work for Fire District #7.
According to the Legislative Auditor’s report, she was paid a total of $28,490 in unemployment benefits from April 13, 2020 until August 4, 2021 while stating that she was laid off in March 2020 due to COVID.
Mrs. Glenn voluntarily turned herself into the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday and was booked on the following charges:
--malfeasance in office
--theft of $25,000 or more
--filing or maintaining false public records
--Illegal transmission of monetary funds
--government benefits fraud
She posted a $50,000 bond through Linda’s Bail Bonds and was released later on Wednesday. Her case will next go to the Grand Jury and if she is indicted she will face trial in District Court.
Last year, Louisiana paid more than $405 million in fraudulent or ineligible pandemic relief benefits to nearly 100,000 people due largely to an overwhelmed unemployment system, according to another report issued by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor.
