The Franklinton Demons and Lady Demons basketball teams faced off with their counterparts from Kentwood last Thursday evening in the FHS gymnasium with the Demons coming out on top 54-46 and the Ladies falling just short at 40-35.
The Demons shot out to a nice 14-4 lead in the first period before the Kangaroos scored some late baskets to close the gap to 17-11 after the opening stanza. In the second period the Demons went on a 12-0 run after the Kangaroos scored the first basket of the period to lead 29-13 with 3:20 left when Kentwood broke the run. The Demons had another 6-0 run to end the quarter to end the half leading 35-15.
In the second half the two teams had made adjustments and were feeling each other out which led to a slowed down, defensive period of basketball, one that the Kangaroos out scored the Demons 10-6 to cut the lead down to 41-25.
In the final period the Kangaroos hit four three pointers and went on a 10-0 run at one point to cut the lead to 50-46 with 1:00 to go in the game, but the Demons played well down the stretch and scored twice more to preserve the win at 54-46.
Billy Gross led the Demons with 21 points with Kee'ontey Williams the only other Demon in double figures with 13. RJ Hart had 7 points, Jakobie McCormick had 6, Wyatt Lambert 4, and Nyjyren Williams 3.
The Lady Demons and the Lady Kangaroos tied up the first period of their game at 7-7 before the Kentwood squad outscored Franklinton 11-1 in the second period. In the third period the Lady Kangaroos outscored the Lady Demons 13-11 to hold a 31-19 advantage. In the final period the Lady Demons fought back furiously as they scored 16 points and held the Lady Kangaroos to just 9 points but they still came up short and fell 40-35.
