Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Franklinton City Council resulted in a contract being awarded for drainage projects on Varnado Street, 18th Avenue, and Alford Street.
Willis Construction was awarded the contract after the bid process was completed. A motion to award the contract to Willis Construction was made by Alderman T.J. Butler Jr. and seconded by Alderwoman Patrice Crain. It was then unanimously approved.
During the meeting, Police Chief Justin Brown reported that all required training has now been completed by all officers of the Franklinton Police Department. He noted that of the two shooting incidents reported to FPD in July, one resulted in an arrest and the other is still in the investigative process because the victim has refused to cooperate.
He also reported that two stolen all-terrain vehicles have been recovered, resulting in four arrests. Brown said the Franklinton Police Department assisted with the recent searches for two drowning victims in the Bogue Chitto River.
The chief also commented on the number of narcotic possession arrests in Franklinton. Brown said that at least 25% of all arrests are related to drug possession. Alderman Seth Descant asked the chief about the results of such arrests. Brown noted that FPD can make an arrest to the letter of the law, but it is up to the court system to take it from there.
Public Works Director Reginald McMasters asked that tree limbs that are cut in the yards of town residents be disposed of by the tree contractor doing the work. He said due to time and budget constraints, it is getting out of control for town workers to haul off tree branches.
Town Clerk Ellen Wascom gave her budget and sales tax report. She said the town government will be starting the process soon to develop next year’s budget.
Mayor Greg Route said he hopes all residents of Franklinton who are not vaccinated will soon get vaccinated. He said a COVID protocol is now in place for town employees who test positive.
Route also noted that the Franklinton Planning and Social Committee is hosting a blood drive at City Hall on Friday, August 20 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.
