Highway 38 from Clifton to the Tangipahoa Parish line is officially the LCpl Larry Wells Memorial Highway, and a dedication ceremony will be held on November 20.
The dedication ceremony is set for 10 a.m. on the 20th at Mount Hermon High School.
Wells was killed in action in Iraq in 2004. He had volunteered for military service soon after graduating from Mount Hermon High School in 2002. His unit engaged in some of the most intense fighting of the entire Iraq War. During a battle at An Najaf on August 6, 20004, Larry was hit and killed by sniper fire.
Last year State Sen. Beth Mizell introduced a bill in the state legislature to rename Highway 38 in Larry Wells’ honor.
However, all activity in the legislature was halted, and it was not until earlier this year that the bill was passed. It was sighed by Gov. John Bel Edwards and became effective August 1. Saturday, Nov. 20, is when the highway will be actually dedicated in honor of Mount Hermon’s hero.
The decication ceremony at Mount Hermon High School is open to everyone.
