The new sidewalks around the courthouse area in Franklinton have been warmly received by local residents.
At the August 23 meeting of the Washington Parish Council, it was announced that the new sidewalks might be extended along Main Street all the way from the courthouse to the fairgrounds.
The announcement was made by parish Public Works Director Ken Wheat. He said an ordinance will be required of the council to seek funding for the project.
Because the new sidewalks have enjoyed widespread public appreciation, it is anticipated that the Parich Council (and also the Franklinton Town Government) will be in strong support of the ordinance.
No timetable has been announced yet. If the funding is approved Wheat would present plans for construction of the new sidewalks. The work would be done by a private contractor, which is how the new sidewalks around the courthouse area were constructed.
In addition, during the meeting Parish President Richard Thomas again urged the public to get vaccinated for COVID. He said, “The vaccination is proven to have protection against this virus.”
Alex Sumrall of the parish Government gave the council an update on work being done in the foyer of the courthouse. All of the ceilings are being replaced, thanks to a grant the parish government obtained.
The parish councilmen offered a strong round of thanks to Kelsey Knight, the director of the new Parish Animal Shelter, for her hard work in helping to implement it and in making the shelter’s operation efficient.
