State Rep. Malinda White has become the second parish-wide elected official to recently leave the Democratic Party.
White, who represents almost all of Washington Parish in the state legislature, last week changed her registration from Democrat to No Party.
She follows on the heels of Sheriff Randy Seal, who last year left the Democratic Party and became a Republican.
In a statement, White said, “The priorities of the people of my district do not fall neatly into a partisan box. I think I will be able to better serve my district by working outside the two-party system, bringing Republicans and Democrats together to solve real problems and improve the lives of the people of our state through economic growth, improved education and investments in infrastructure. This was a difficult decision for me personally, because I’ve enjoyed working with the good men and women of the Democratic Caucus. But I think it was the right decision for District 75.”
She was first elected in 215 as a Democrat and was re-elected in 2019, again as a Democrat.
As an independent, White can choose which party she will caucus with in the future.
The Bogalusa businesswoman was previously a member of the Bogalusa City Council before mounting her successful run for state representative in 2015.
