Game of the Week - Franklinton at Bogalusa. This game will probably be my game of the week every year. This year it means a lot to both teams. The Demons haven't won this series since 2018 and need a win period making this game ultra important for them. Of added importance the Demons are looking to start their season off under their new head coach with a win making this game very big for them. The Lumberjacks are looking to prove that they are one of the top 3A teams in the state this season after their great season last year and need to get off to a good start. This game is huge!
The trash talking has already started between the two communities on the job and social media.
Should be a good one.
Road Dog Special - Amite at Hammond. A scheduled Thursday game this features the best team in the parish against one of the two biggest schools in the parish.
Amite won the state championship last season in class 2A and are looking to get off to a good start in 2022 by beating the 5A Tornados to kick off the season.
The Tornados would love nothing more than to beat a defending state championship team and have a program defining win to begin their 2022 season.
Should be a good one.
Notes and Quotes
Gary Gaines, former head coach of the Permian Panthers football team of the Friday Night Lights book and movie fame, passed away last week. Coach Gaines and his teams’ influence on the game of high school football cannot be measured in wins and losses. Millions of people read the book and even more saw the movie inspired by the book.
"Overall, our effort was good and we avoided penalties; however, we had too many blown assignments. This is the reason for jamborees and it's nothing we can't fix." ---Franklinton head coach Guy Lecompte
"We have to play more consistent. We started very slow and didn't play very good in the first half, too many mistakes especially on offense. I thought our defense as a whole played well. They had one big play but other than that I was happy with our play. I have to complement the defensive line; we challenged them all week and they improved. Offensively we have go get the pass protection figured out. Gave up too much pressure." --- Pine head coach Bradley Seal
"I thought we opened up well, went down and scored on the first drive and had a defensive stop. We gave up a score right before half to make it 6-6. We turned the ball over a couple of times in the second half which limited our offensive possessions in the second half and caused us to give up a score at the end of the game. When you have a pretty even match up usually the team with the least number of turnovers wins. Hopefully, we get some of that cleaned up and take care of the ball a little better next week. We play Pine in the village next week and it should be a pretty exciting environment. Although they have grown a lot over the last several years it is still a rivalry game that the kids get up for. It should be a great game." --- Varnado head coach Adam Brumfield
"We had a good night, offense did just what we needed them to do all night. We did hurt ourselves on a few drives but the defense picked the offense up. The defense had one drive where we let them score but the rest of the night we were lights out on defense. Considering the conditions we played in I am very proud of my guys." --- Bens Ford head coach Destin Pittman
"I definitely wouldn't say we went backwards, but we were definitely sloppier last night than last week, which is why you do these scrimmages and jamborees. We did get to see a lot of different situations last night in a half of football that you might not see for weeks so I was pleased with that and how we responded. Obviously, I like to win but with how we played last night I'll take the tie and getting out of there with a lot to clean up and focus on, starting with myself and on down." --- Denham Springs head coach Brett Beard
"This time of year, you have to find depth, an extra guy or two, to keep other starters fresh on the field. That was a large part of the outcome Friday. Two very good teams! We were able to give our guys a break early. In the end we were able to make fewer mistakes on the field. Finish on top. The Wildcats are going to be the team to watch in 1A. Fast, big and strong!" --- Independence head coach Scott Shaffett
"It was great to be able to get some real game reps. We did some good things and saw a lot that needs fixing." --- Pearl River head coach Eric Collins
