Game of the Week - Jefferson Rise (0-3) at Varnado (0-3). Yes, I know the records don't jump off the page as a great game but it should be an evenly matched game and thus, at least in this sportswriter's way of thinking, that makes it a great matchup.
Varnado has been tested so far and actually beat Jefferson's last opponent in a scrimmage just before the season. This gives us reason to believe that the Wildcats are the favorites if they can be healthy.
Should be a good one.
Notes and Quotes
"We took a step forward and I'm proud of their effort; however, there are things that we need to clean up. We had too many penalties, which is something that could cost us in closer games. There's a standard of performance that we are looking to attain." Franklinton head coach Guy Lecompte
"This was a total team win. They had a very good running back and our defense played well all night. Our offense hit big plays when we needed it. Our last drive to take the lead was seventeen plays and took ten minutes off the clock. I'm very proud of our team." Pine head coach Bradley Seal
"We finally put three quarters together and showed what we are capable of doing. Still much to clean up but our effort has been great. Our offensive line was on point. Proud of Josiah for his night. Set a new personal best rushing. Silliman is a very good team and we will need our best effort to win. Invite everyone to come out and enjoy." Bowling Green head coach Phill Junkins
"They were a lot more physical than we were. We had multiple kids go out with injuries that were two way starters and that's hard for us to recover from. We have to find a way to get healthy. We also need to practice better in order to play better." Varnado head coach Adam Brumfield
"We came out strong in the first half and played really well. Then in the second half we hurt ourself with penalties and turnovers." Bens Ford head coach Destin Pittman
"Again, all three facets of the game were very solid with big plays and huge momentum swings. Defensively we bent at times but as the field condensed, we got better and had big stops. Offensively our quarterback played really well and because of it, got our run game going. Our offensive line is getting better every week which will ultimately make us go. You know I love Franklinton, it's where I got my start and I'm excited to play there and see old friends." Denham Springs head coach Brett Beard
"I was proud that we fought hard to the end. We had a chance to win but, in the end, we did not make enough plays." Pearl River head coach Eric Collins
"Another rough night for the Tigers. Confidence is low. That's hard to overcome sometimes. Struggling in all phases of the game right now. We're gonna piece it back together a little at a time. It's only week three. We have time before district gets here to hopefully right the ship. I love these guys. They haven't quit. They want to win like we all do. We have to keep the faith, small steps, one positive play at a time! This week we have Pearl River at home Thursday night. It's a great time to start getting better one play at a time." Independence head coach Scott Shaffett
