The Franklinton Demons football team won a hard fought game last week against the #10 ranked 4A Belle Chasse Cardinal, 24-17. The win moves the Demons’ record to 2-3 on the season as they will begin district action this Friday against the Hannan Hawks. The Hawks are 2-3 on the season and defeated St Thomas Aquinas 35-6 last week. The Demons have not played the Hawks since 1994 and have only played them twice, falling to Hannan both times.
Franklinton head coach Guy Lecompte said his team is getter better. "We're improving every week and starting to develop better habits. I'm extremely proud of my team's effort! They played hard until the very end."
Belle Chasse opened the scoring on their initial drive of the game with a 24 yard field goal to go up 3-0. The Demons answered with a Kade Lavigne 35 yard field goal with 11:55 on the clock in the second to tie the game.
After the kickoff the Cardinals had the ball at the Demons 27 after two unsportsmanlike penalties were marked off against them. The Demons forced a punt but turned the ball over on a fumble back to the Cardinals on the next play at the Demons 26. The Cardinals took advantage this time and scored on a six yard run to go up 10-3 with 4:27 left in the first half.
The Demons were forced to punt and would go into halftime trailing 10-3.
The Demons opened the second half with a nice drive which was capped off with a 17 yard touchdown run by Zion Anders with 8:26 in the third to tie the game at 10-10.
The teams traded punts and turnovers before the Demons took the lead midway of the fourth when Senqualon Conerly scored on a ten yard run. The extra point was missed but the Demons were up 16-10.
The Cardinals answered quickly as they scored on a 66 yard pass on their next offensive play, which was one of two completed passes in the game. The extra point was good and Belle Chasse went up 17-16 with 5:33 left in the game.
The Demons took over at their own 34 after the kickoff and scored after a few plays when Anders hit Kelly Daniels on a screen pass which he then ran in from 43 yards for a touchdown to put the Demons back on top with 2:43 left in the game. The Demons elected to go for two, which Anders ran in and put them up 24-17.
Belle Chasse moved into Demon territory quickly but bogged down at the 24 as the Demons defense held them there on 4th down and 2 yards to go to take over on downs with :38 left in the game. Anders knelt on the ball to run out the time and the Demons had won the game.
Zion Anders was 6 of 15 passing for 106 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries. Kelly Daniels caught four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, Kollin Williams had one reception for 18 yards and Senqualon Conerly caught one for 10 yards. Conerly also rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Micah Hart had 4 carries for 22 yards and Kelly Daniels had 2 carries for 24 yards.
