The Franklinton Junior High Falcons lost their season opener last Tuesday evening on a wet field in a game that was played in part during a heavy rain. The St Paul Wolves came out on top of an 8-0 score.
The Falcons punted on the opening possession of the game giving the Wolves their first opportunity. The Wolves drove consistently down the field before finally scoring with a pass play on fourth down from the four yard line. Their two point conversion was also a pass that was successful and put them up 8-0 with 1:18 left in the first period. Both teams possessed the ball again before the half but the Falcons failed to move the ball while the Wolves fumbled after a short drive during the rain.
In the fourth quarter the Falcons fumbled over to the Wolves at their own 28, setting up St Paul's in excellent field position. The Falcons defense stiffened, however and shut down the Wolves offense forcing a turnover on downs.
The Falcons had a final opportunity to score but again their offense wasn't on track and the Wolves won the game 8-0.
The Falcons veteran coach, Andy Creel, saw some positives in the loss. "I thought that our guys played hard and competed well against a good football team in sloppy conditions. Other than the first drive, the defense played lights out." Said Coach Creel. But he also saw some places they could improve. "Our offense could not get anything going and we have to get better. You are not going to win many football games if you don't score."
The Falcons will be on the road for their next game which will be played at Mt Hermon on September 12.
