Last week, Sheriff Jason Smith along with, B.B. Rayburn Correctional Center’s Warden, Travis Day and District Attorney Collin Sims partnered to bring in 8th grade boys from across the parish to RCC.
The field trip was designed to show the boys the realities of prison life and what one bad decision can lead to.
“This is the end of the road for the justice system. I think it is important for you all to know the reality of what happens when you make a bad decision and the path you can follow if you don’t surround yourself with the right people,” Sheriff Smith said.
Sheriff Smith introduced the process of the justice system and speakers in order of each person you may encounter if you make a bad decision.
Deputy sheriffs and police officers spoke to the boys about how respect can go a long way during traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement. Sheriff Smith talked about the differences between jail and prison and what they could expect if they end up in the Washington Parish Jail.
After the Sheriff, DA Sims spoke about himself and his history of prosecuting on local, state and federal levels.
Finally, corrections officers from RCC led the students through the prison.
The 8th graders were shown cell blocks and a dormitory, getting to speak with inmates in each, hearing their stories and their pleas for the boys to be smart and follow a good path.
Additionally, students listened to inmates’ speeches and from a mother who lost one son to violence and another son to the system.
“Having the opportunity to show the young men who participated in the correctional facility visit what incarceration life looks like and how certain actions have consequences was surreal,” RCC Warden Travis Day said. “We were extremely proud to participate, and we hope the day will have a lasting impact on those eighth graders.”
Participating schools included Varnado Junior High School, Franklinton Junior High School, Bowling Green School, Pine Junior High School, Mount Hermon School, Northshore Charter School and Bogalusa Junior High School.
