The year 2022 marked a time of new frontiers. As the world adjusted to life beyond COVID-19, Artemis I launched into space carrying tree seeds destined to inspire a new generation. Moon Trees—living symbols of exploration, wonder, and possibility.
Here in Washington Parish, that journey took root thanks to the vision and collaboration of local leaders. Then-CEO of the Young Men’s C Christian Association of Bogalusa, Toni St. Philip, granted permission for volunteer George Corkern—who would later become STEAM Director—to work in the community garden. This initial step sparked a mutual goal of empowering local youth between Toni and George, ultimately setting in motion the effort to bring a Moon Tree to our parish.
After more than a year of paperwork and communication, we received the exciting news: Washington Parish had been selected as a recipient of a Moon Tree. Since then, both Toni and George have gone on to become NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors, strengthening our region’s ties to science and space exploration.
While the original plan was to plant the tree at the YMCA in Bogalusa, unforeseen challenges required a new location. Determined to keep this national treasure within the parish, Toni and George worked tirelessly to identify a site that met NASA’s requirements. Among several candidates, Franklinton High School stood out as the ideal home. Principal Shane Smith embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, and plans were finalized to plant the Moon Tree there.
As Toni often expressed: “We wanted to ensure the Moon Tree, a national artifact, remained in Washington Parish. Knowing it will take root at Franklinton High School, where it can inspire students and the community alike, is a dream fulfilled.”
Now, as Washington Parish prepares to welcome its own Moon Tree, we look forward to the legacy it will create. This living symbol will remind us all to grow, to dream, and to pursue opportunities — whether in education, business, or personal discovery. It is never too late to learn a new skill, start a new venture, or embark on a new adventure.
As a member of the leadership team of Teach Remember Communicate Grow (TRCG), our commitment to expanding STEAM education and opportunities for every resident of Washington Parish has never been stronger. Together, we can build an environment that prepares our youth and adults for the challenges of tomorrow, said George Corkern
We invite you to join us on Friday, September 26th at Franklinton High School for the planting of Washington Parish’s very own Moon Tree — a milestone that will inspire generations to come.
