NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A July 18 trial date has been set in the federal tax case against New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams.
The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reports that U.S. District Judge Lance Africk set the new trial date Monday. Williams and his law partner, Nicole Burdett, are accused in an 11-count indictment of conspiring to cheat on Williams' taxes during a five-year period ending in 2017.
A Jan. 24 trial start was delayed while prosecutors pursued an unsuccessful appeal of a pre-trial ruling that barred them from digging into details of Williams’ past disputes with the Internal Revenue Service. That ruling was made by U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman, who died on Jan. 26 at age 87. The case has since been reassigned to Africk.
Williams and Burdett are accused of conspiring to inflate Williams’ business deductions by more than $700,000 with help from Henry Timothy. They have pleaded not guilty.
Timothy, a Westwego tax preparer, has pleaded guilty to lying on his own taxes.
