MONROE, La. (AP) — The superintendent of a northeast Louisiana school district has announced plans to retire.
Ouachita Parish Superintendent Don Coker told the parish School Board on Tuesday that he's leaving July 4, 2023, The News-Star reported.
“I do want to officially let the board know that at the end of my contract on July 3, I will be officially retiring on July 4,” Coker said. “I’ll be able to remember that because that’s Independence Day and it will be true independence when I actually retire.”
Coker has led the school district since 2015, replacing Bob Webber. He has worked more than 35 years in the Ouachita Parish School System, serving as a teacher and coach at West Ouachita High School before joining Calhoun Middle School as principal. Following 12 years at Calhoun Middle, Coker was appointed as the school system’s personnel director before being named assistant superintendent in 2012.
A search for his replacement is expected to start in December.
