As America prepares to celebrate the Semiquincentennial --- our nation's 250th birthday --- Washington Parish is honored to be part of a special national project led by Washingtons Unite, an initiative bringing together the communities named for our first President, George Washington.
As part of this effort, each participating parish and county was invited to contribute a custom quilting square to be included in a commemorative quilt representing 31 Washington communities across the country. Washington Parish enlisted Sandy Miller, a Washington Parish native and the parish's only member of the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Sandy, alongside her friend and fellow quilter Kathy Mauthe, designed a beautiful square that reflects the spirit, heritage, and pride of our parish.
The completed squares will be sent to Arkansas, where they will be assembled into a single quilt to be unveiled in July 2026 as part of the nationwide Semiquincentennial celebration.
Washington Parish President Ryan Seal said he is especially proud to recognize Sandy and Kathy's involvement with the Quilts of Valor Foundation, whose mission is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts. As of July 31, 2026, more than 437,000 quilts have been awarded across the country; each one carrying a heartfelt message: "Thank you for your service and sacrifice."
The Washington Parish Government extended its sincere appreciation to Sandy and Kathy for sharing their time, talent, and love for Washington Parish. Their work ensures that our parish will forever be stitched into this historic national tribute.
