AMITE, La. (AP) — Louisiana authorities say two drivers have died in crashes at railroad crossings in different parts of the state.
Louisiana State Police say James Kelly, 55, of Delhi, was thrown from his pickup truck when a freight train hit it about 4 p.m. Wednesday in Delhi.
About an hour later, an Amtrak passenger train hit a dump truck south of Amite. Cedric West, 60, of Minden, died in that crash, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office told news agencies.
“Amtrak reports that no other injuries were a result of this collision, but the train’s engine was disabled due to damage,” Chief Deputy Jimmy Travis told WVUE-TV.
State police said Kelly was not wearing a seat belt when he failed to yield to a Kansas City-Southern train. The crash sent his 2010 Chevrolet Silverado into a ditch, where it overturned, a news release said. He died at a hospital.
