Local law enforcement personnel are shown in the photo above running through Franklinton on a hot and humid Monday of this week, as they carried the Special Olympics torch. Sheriff Jason Smith is shown in the center with the American flag.
Later on Monday the torch was passed to St. Tammany officers at the parish line on Highway 25. The torch will eventually wind up at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, where the Special Olympics will be held on May 23, 24, and 25.
The torch run started in Slidell, came up to Washington Parish, went back into St. Tammany, and then headed toward Hammond. In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, local runners were from the Franklinton Police Department, the Franklinton High School JROTC and the Bogalusa High School JROTC, and the Bogalusa Police Department.
