It has been an ongoing debate recently if sugar makes children or adults hyper.
Yes, you read that correctly. Scientific research has consistently shown that there is no link between sugar consumption and hyperactivity in children or adults.
I can promise you without deeper research that no mothers were on this panel of scientists. None!
Twenty-five years ago, I sat in a biology college course listening to a professor of science teach that dogs do not think for themselves. They strictly act on instinct.
Scientific research could not reveal any evidence otherwise. And yet, my dog would go sit beneath our king size bed and pout for a solid hour when he was told no. He would get on the couch and mope if we pulled out our luggage. And he would run to his dog bowl when he saw Clay pull out his food. I am not sure how instinctive these actions were. They seemed to be perfectly thought-out forms of emotion and even manipulation. Sounds like some thinking was going on there.
Well, now years later scientists are taking that old conclusion back and saying that yes indeed dogs do have actual thought processes that exceed the original conclusion downplaying their capabilities. And as a dog lover and past educator, some dogs even surpass that of human beings with logical deductions. If a dog acts leery around a person, you might want to be cautious.
With that being said, I can go ahead and state what’s obvious to a mother: Sugar is not our friend.
A lady who has five grown children was laughing and telling me the other day that Easter Sunday was one of their most cherished and dreaded mornings. She said her children would bounce down the stairs, all happy and excited to see what the Easter Bunny had left and within an hour of tearing into the candy they were fighting, crying, and not wanting to get ready for church. I told her about these recent studies, and she said, "They are wrong."
Being in my 50's I can now drink coffee in the afternoon and still sleep at night. I can eat sugar in the evening and sleep also. But when I was younger? Especially if I drank coffee with something sweet. I was staring at the ceiling until 3:00 a.m. with racing thoughts.
Ask an elementary school teacher when she lets her students have the cupcakes Little Sarah's Mom sent for her birthday? They get them at the end of the day before going home to their parents. Teachers must not have been included in the study either. They will tell you the most frustrating days of the year are not the day of Valentines or Halloween but the day after. Students are irritable coming down off their sugar high.
As always, Moms don't need scientists to manage their children and pets. The sugar myth is now reported to be an old wives' tale. And why do you think that is? Why do you think all those wives made it up?
Scientists also report there is no significant correlation between a full moon and human aggression. When Friday is a full moon the day after Halloween, teachers call in sick and Mom's take an extra dose of vitamins. It's not science. It is experience getting those wives to talking.
