It was nothing short of a simple shut out, but it was a Buccaneer victory, nevertheless. The Bowling Green Buccaneers defeated the Amite School Center Rebels of Liberty Mississippi 41-0 last Friday. This moves their overall record to 6-2, with a MAIS District 3-4A standing of 3-0.
The Buccaneers received the opening kickoff and what was a never-ending series of penalties, finally led to a touchdown pass to Senior Kelly Daniels.
Daniels’ touchdown at 9:12 on the game clock for a 6-0 score with a PAT by Alex Brock began the shutout victory; opening score 7-0.
On a first run from a "swinging gate" drive by the Rebels, it resulted in a fumble recovered by Buccaneer Tucker Penton. Again, within a sea of yellow flags, the Buccaneers' offensive team led by Quarterback L J Jenkins scored again with a handoff to Bubby Bryant, and a successful Brock PAT for a 14-0 score, clock 6:14.
On the Rebels second possession after a defensive hard hit from Luke Hingle, the ball was fumbled again with a second recovery by Penton. On the first play of this third Buccaneer possession, Gabe Jas closed the first quarter, 2:21, with a 47-yard rush for a third Buccaneer touchdown, 20-0. Brock's PAT was right on target, edging the lead to 21-0.
At 9:36 into a second quarter, a drive put the Bucs on the scoreboard again with a run from Bubby Bryant, another Brock PAT for a 28-0.
Penalties forced the Rebels to start the kickoff return from a touchback kickoff starting at their 20-yard line. A quick defensive effort from the Buccaneer defense, Penton recovered his third fumble. This gave way for a Kelly Daniels quick touchdown score, unsuccessful PAT, halftime score of 34-0.
Second half, the Buccaneers played with a running clock and highly spirited Buccaneer substitutions. Third quarter no score, and into the fourth quarter Rayden Rayborn intercepted a Rebel pass. Jayce Miller turns that turnover into another Buccaneer touchdown, Brock's PAT was good, for a final score of 41-0.
Head Coach Jason Johnson’s reactions after the game: "Good effort again last night from the team. They continue to prepare well and play hard. I thought we had a balance on offense with two TD passes last night, and we ran the ball well. Defensively it was our third shutout. Coach King does a great job prepping our defense each week. We have put ourselves in a situation where we are playing for a district championship this Friday against Centreville. Right where we want to be!"
Buccaneer stat leaders include rushing leaders Gabe Jas (4/97 yds), Kelly Daniels (2/24yds), Bubby Bryant (6/50 yds), receiving yards Kelly Daniels (3/92yds), Alex Brock (5/6 PATS), defensive efforts of JP Brumfield, Tucker Pittman, and Luke Hingle nailed this victory.
Buccaneers will host Centreville this week in W.E. "Buck" Hellen stadium for the MAIS District 3-4A Championship game, starting at 7:00 pm.
