The snow and ice that kept Washington Parish students out of school for 4 days in late January must now be made up.
Parish students had an already-scheduled holiday on Monday, January 20, for Martin Luther King Day.
But thanks to the snow and ice storm, students in the parish school system were also out of school on Tuesday, January 21 through and including Friday, January 24. (Bowling Green School held classes on Friday, January 24.)
The parish school system explained that while most roads were clear by Friday, there remained some slippery spots in the rural parish.
State law requires that school districts must provide 177 days of instruction per school year.
So parish students will make up the snow days in two different ways. A teacher development day planned for March 17 has been scrubbed for now, and students will attend school that day.
In addition, virtual learning will be conducted during the Mardi Gras holiday week of March 3 through March 7. Schools will be providing more information about this to parents as Mardi Gras approaches.
In another schedule change caused by the snow and ice storm, Mount Hermon School’s Homecoming has been rescheduled for this week. It will be held on Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Homecoming’s original date in January had to be cancelled due to the weather event.
