Students in Washington Parish are enjoying their final two weeks of summer vacation as the 2026-2027 school year will start soon.
Washington Parish schools will begin classes on Thursday, August 6, and Bowling Green School will have its first day on Monday, August 6.
Jennifer Thomas, superintendent of Washington Parish Schools, said all systems are “Go”for the new school year.
“We’re excited about the opportunities thst lie ahead for the Washington Parish schools,” she said.
She noted that almost all of the school leadership in the parish schools will remain unchanged for 2026-2027. The only change is that Lucretia Marks will take over as principal at Varnado High School, and Karen Creel will be the assistant principal.
“I truly believe we have the very best teachers, support staff, administrators, and, above all, the very best students in the state of Louisiana,’ Mrs. Thomas said. “Their dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence are what make our district so special.”
She added, “There is no question that we will face financial challenges this year. Like many school systems across our state, we must make difficult decisions and be responsible stewards of every dollar we receive. However, those challenges will never change our commitment to students. We will continue to put children first, provide a high-quality education, and create schools where every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.”
Meanwhile, both the Franklinton Police Department and the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office are reminding motorists to be especially cautious as the new school year begins, watching for students going to and from school, and being careful as youngsters are getting on and off of school buses.
School speed limits will be enforced, and motorists are reminded that by state law all school zones are “hands free” as to usage of cell phones.
