The Franklinton Demons football team traveled over to Kentwood to take on the perennial power, Kentwood Kangaroos, in a controlled scrimmage last Thursday. Both teams ran a set number of plays against the other team before a timed session was held to end the scrimmage.
The Kangaroos were on offense first and scored from two yards out after a quick drive. They then scored on a 70 yard pass before the Demons Rickken Burkhalter intercepted a pass to end their third drive.
The Demons then drove consistently to the Kentwood 20 yard line before fumbling the ball over to the Roos there.
Kentwood scored in their second series of downs on an 18 yard run play but the Demons offense sputtered.
The Demons opened the timed session with possession and moved to the Kentwood 30 yard line where a pass into the endzone was dropped to turn the ball over on downs to Kentwood. Kentwood moved the ball over midfield but the Demons defense stiffened and forced them to turn the ball over on downs at the Demons 46. The Demons put together another consistent offensive drive that saw them inside the ten yard line and was capped off with Sy Austin’s six yard run for a touchdown on the last play of the timed session.
The Demons and Kangaroos second teams also saw considerable time but neither team scored.
Quarterback Jacob Crain was 5 of 7 passing for 73 yards with one run for 8 yards. Kelly Daniels caught two passes for 17 yards, Conner Magee had one reception for 18 yards, Micah Hart had one for 22 yards and Michael Brock had one for 16 yards. Rayshone Manuel rushed 7 times for 44 yards, Sy Austin rushed 3 times for 14 yards and a touchdown, Micah Hart rushed 3 times for 23 yards and Kelly Daniels rushed once for 6 yards.
Coach Saltaformaggio was pleased with the work his time got against a solid opponent. “I felt that Kentwood gave us a great look into what we need to do to better prepare for the season. We have a lot of work to do, but I am excited about the fact that we have the players and coaches to get there. I like playing excellent competition and we absolutely did that last night.”
The Demons are scheduled to participate in the Parkview Baptist jamboree on August 24 against the host Parkview.
