At the January 12, 2023, meeting of the Washington Parish School Board, three district high schools presented outstanding students.
Dr. Latricia Warren, principal of Varnado High School presented members of the National Technical Honor Society, National Beta Club, Key Club, and National Junior Beta Club and detailed some of the service they provided to the community and the school. Most of them are in two are more clubs/organizations at VHS and participate in sports and other extracurricular activities as well.
Next Pine High School principal Ramona Thomas presented Madison Morgan and Samuel Thomas who were named to the LHSAA Composite All-Academic Team for basketball and soccer respectively. Ms. Thomas explained that despite the heavy workload of an extracurricular sport and numerous clubs, the two had all A's on their transcript for their four years of high school. Coach Trey Jenkins presented Cameron Magee, FFA member, who last month won 2nd place overall in public speaking in the state. He reiterated that she too is very involved on Pine's campus.
Finally, Principal Shane Smith of Franklinton High School presented Curtis Williams, semifinalist out of 91,000 applicants for the Coca Cola Scholarship; D'Michael Ward was recognized at Football State Championship games at the Superdome for being named to the LHSAA Composite All-Academic Team in football. Joining him was Khaled Waliagha, who has committed to play football for Army at the United States Military Academy at West Point and was also recognized at the Superdome Classic for being on the LHSAA Composite All-Academic Team for football. The final recognition by Principal Smith was Landon Blakeney who won the LHSAA State Farm Prep Classic Poster Contest. Landon received a year of free items at Cane's as well as a hotel stay in New Orleans and a suite in the LA Superdome to enjoy the high school football championships.
Note: The LHSAA Composite All-Academic Team is the top scholars in all classifications. All the Washington Parish honorees have a 4.0 gpa on their high school transcripts.
