The Washington Parish Council met most recently on Monday, February 12. Following the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, the minutes from the January 22 meeting were approved.
Vincent Wynne, candidate for District Attorney was on the agenda to speak; however, he was unable to attend the meeting. The next two items on the agenda were the adoption of resolutions of appointment for the Washington Parish Fire Protection District No. 7 and District No. 3 Board of Directors. Joan E. Miller was appointed to District 7 with the term set to expire on December 31, 2025. Tommy Waldrep was appointed to District No. 3 with the term to expire on December 31, 2024.
The Council then adopted a resolution to remove 0.42 miles of Jimmie Magee Road from Washington Parish Road Inventory Parish Road No. 08-126.
Next, the Council adopted a resolution to authorize the Parish President to sign contracts, agreements, cooperative endeavor agreements, etc. between the Washington Parish Government and the Louisiana Office of Community Development regarding the Resilient Communities Infrastructure Program/Hometown Revitalization Program.
The Council advanced the construction of much-anticipated new sidewalks on Main Street from Washington Street to Bene Street. The Council approved a resolution to authorize the Parish President to sign agreements and all other necessary documentation between the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Washington Parish Government for funding of sidewalks in Franklinton through the Louisiana DOTD 2023 Transportation Alternatives Program. The Council also adopted a resolution to authorize the Parish President to sign an agreement between Meyer Engineers, LTD., and Washington Parish Government to provide engineer services for sidewalk construction in Franklinton.
The final piece of business was approving a resolution to authorize the Parish President to sign an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Town of Franklinton for sidewalk improvements in Franklinton. The construction of the sidewalks will begin soon and will greatly enhance the appearance of Main Street, one of the parish's busiest throughfares.
Parish President Ryan Seal, Director of Public Works Ken Wheat and Transportation Manager Danny Knight gave brief reports. This concluded business by the Council and the meeting was adjourned.
