A Thomas community watermelon grower who broke a state record this summer says there is a lot more than meets the eye to growing a championship melon.
Daryl Burnthorn and his wife Judy showed their watermelons at the state Watermelon Festival in Farmerville last weekend.
Burnthorn’s Blck Diamond watermelon weighed in at 220.45 pounds to break the state record. was the He also showed a Carolina Cross watermelon that topped the scales at 232.95 pounds.
The Burnthorns said growing championship melons requires plenty of time. Grafting, choosing the perfect shaped melon, making sure the mlons are pollinated, shading them, and most of all, having perfect soil conditions.
Burnthorn puts a lot of time into his watermelon growing effort. He says it’s truly a science to him.
