The Varnado Wildcats football program has a new head coach. Vonta Owens has been offered and accepted the position. The head football coach position was vacant after Coach Adam Brumfield stepped down recently after leading the Wildcats for the last four seasons.
Coach Owens is a native of Sandy Hook, Mississippi, a graduate of Dexter and also played at Southwest Community College. He began his coaching career under Brumfield at Bogalusa and in 2022 he was promoted to defensive coordinator under Bogalusa coach Cyril Crutchfield and played a crucial role in the Lumberjacks success
Coach Owens said he is fired up about his new position. "I'm honored and excited to be named the new head football coach at Varnado High School. This is a proud program with a rich tradition, and I'm looking forward to building strong relationships with the players, staff, and community.
Coach Owens went on to say that he is ready for the hard work and working with the young men of Varnado. "It's going to be a process but I think we can bring the culture back to what it used to be. I'm ready to get to work and I think the kids are too. I'm interested to see what this season brings!"
