The huge explosion and fire that happened on Friday in Roseland, 25 miles west of Franklinton, has made national news. The incident has resulted in an evacuation of nearby resdents and has caused concern about harm being caused to the environment and humans. Oily residue is in the Tangipahoa River and containment efforts are underway.
But the disaster also had multiple effects in next-door Washington Parish.
First, local volunteer fire departments in Washington Parish were mobilized to help with the response to the incident. Firefighters and equipment from Washington Parish Volunteer Fire Districts #2, #4, #5, #6, and #7 responded, offering mutual aid and assistance to the Tangipahoa Parish fire departments on the scene. As of early Monday of this week, the fire was 90% contained.
In addition, approximately 40 residents in the Stoney Point and Richardson areas of far western Washington Parish have reported the oily substance from the explosion and fire on their homes, pools, and other property. Additionally, another 10 reports have come from residents in the Franklinton and Enon areas.
Parish President Ryan Seal said any Washington Parish resident experiencing oily residue, soot, or other substances from the fire on their property should contact the Parish Government office.
He noted that Washington Parish Government is actively monitoring the situation of the explosion and fire.
Seal coordinated environmental testing with Eagle Environmental on Saturday morning. Water, soil, and air quality assessments are being conducted in the affected areas. Preliminary findings indicate no airborne contaminants in the western part of the parish, he said. Testing is ongoing, and while the Parish Government does not yet have a definitive timeline for the return of water and soil results, updates will be provided as information becomes available.
Seal said, “We are working closely with Sheriff Jason Smith, Franklinton Mayor Darwin Sharp, and Franklinton Police Chief Justin Brown to ensure continued response and communication.”
He added, “Washington Parish Government extends its sincere thanks to all first responders and community members for their cooperation and support during this event.”
