What’s Going On
FEBRUARY is … BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Facts Concerning:
Vernon Community and Vernon School (Pt.1 of 3)
The Vernon community began with only African Americans.
Vernon Community (Black Community) began during the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation when all slaves were declared to be set free.
Like many other black communities during this period newly freeded slaves moved away from plantations and slave masters to venture out on their own to experience new found freedom. Many came to settle in this area which had rich sandy soil, gentle rolling hills and a large supply of pines. The area used to be home to a few Flat Bush Indians. This might explain all of the arrowheads we found as children. The community was considered unique because it had no slave plantations.
The history of blacks in this community also intertwines the history of people of this nation and of the world. We are proud people of a proud heritage. Our forefathers helped shape history far and near.
The African women in the community were good faithful mothers and homemakers.
The African men were great hunters, trappers and farmers.
