Hello everyone! I pray you all are doing well. As you know several cases of Covid have been in our community, and the surrounding area. Looks as if it's going to hang around trying to get us done.
By the way, we also survived a devastating time nineteen years ago. Tomorrow, August 29th, is when Katrina visited us and did lots of damage. She turned our community around for better and for worse. Give thanks to the Lord. Sometimes it takes drastic things happening to us to get our attention.
KATRINA REFLECTIONS OF AUG. 29, 2005
My family and I were blessed to have little damage to our area, of course, only a few miles away trees were uprooted and twisted off, plus barns and houses were heavily damaged.
One thing I'll never forget: there was no electricity for weeks. We did have plenty of water and a gas stove to cook on. Family and friends came to get cold showers and a hot meal. We had frozen vegetables and meats from the freezer and the ice chest. I cooked peas and corn with cornbread for days trying to use them before ruining. Very little ice was available. I drove to town for one bag of ice per family. Before long truckloads of ice were brought to Clifton Baptist Church. We were so thankful to be able to get the ice we needed. Now we could have good ole iced tea, and cold water to drink.
We sat outside to eat and visit, because inside the house was unbearable. It was like a picnic for some time at my house. Family time was all we could do. No place to go. The dairy farmers in some households had generators, but we did not have one.
During this time truckloads of bottled water, canned foods, baby food, diapers, baby supplies, cleaning supplies plus other items. Truckloads were brought to the Rutter-Rex plants and Franklinton First Baptist Church. Shelby helped me transport cases of supplies to our church at Mt. Pisgah. One night someone brought me a trailer load. Everything was set up in the church fellowship hall for church family, and friends in our community. Charlie and Chris came at night to help me unload the trailer. We had a good variety of things.
Getting all the assistance was truly a blessing. Even though people had money to buy things, stores did not have it, plus the gas supply for automobiles was limited.
I pray we never have another Katrina or none of her kin visit us again. When hard times come the Lord always takes care of his children. Through time like this we are strengthened with his mighty love. The church pews were full, and people worked together. Let us take time to give thanks for what we have. In just a few minutes what we have worked on for a lifetime can be taken away.
