The Franklinton Junior High Falcons won their fifth game in a row last week as they put together a strong all-around performance defeating Varnado 38-6 behind a balanced offensive attack and a defense that created several key turnovers.
The Falcons wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. On the opening play of the game, Jy'Quarious Dykes broke loose for a touchdown run to give FJHS a 6-0 lead. The extra point was unsuccessful.
The Falcons defense then made its presence felt, recovering a Varnado fumble at the Varnado 22-yard line. Two plays later, Jyren Warren found the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 12-0. FJHS followed with a successful two-point pass to make it 14-0.
The Falcons continued to control the first half when Knox Smith scored on a 33-yard touchdown run. A two-point run by Warren pushed the score to 20-0.
Varnado finally answered with a touchdown, but the Falcons responded before halftime, with Smith breaking loose for a 68-yard touchdown run, putting the Falcons ahead 28-6 at the break.
The FJHS defense, mostly reserves, continued its strong play in the second half, recording a safety to increase the advantage to 30-6.
FJHS added another touchdown in the fourth quarter when Dykes scored on a 35-yard touchdown run, making the final margin 38-6.
The win featured big plays on both sides of the ball, with the Falcons getting touchdown runs from Dykes, Smith and Warren while the defense forced turnovers and kept Varnado out of the end zone for most of the night.
FJHS will return to action September 29 at Westside Amite.
