The Bowling Green Buccaneers improved their overall record to 2-2 last Friday by defeating Wayne Academy at W. E. “Buck” Hellen Stadium in Franklinton. The Bucs also evened their district record at 1-1 with the 36-21 win over the Jaguars.
On their second possession of the game, the Bucs put together a 10 play, 75 yard touchdown drive. Kyron Cowart found the end zone from 11 yards out and Alex Brock kicked the PAT to put BGS ahead 7-0 with 42 seconds left in the quarter.
Wayne Academy answered with a touchdown run five plays later. The PAT tied the game at 7-7 with 11:48 remaining in the second quarter.
The Jaguars defense came up big just two plays later by stripping the football from a BGS ball carrier and returning it for a 30 yard touchdown. Another PAT put the Jaguars ahead with 11:07 left in the second.
The Buccaneers answered on the ensuing possession. Behind a strong running game, BGS went 75 yards in 7 plays. A 19 yard touchdown around the left side by Cowart and another Brock PAT with 6:06 left in the second quarter tied the game at 14-14. That would be the last score of the first half.
The Bucs received the kickoff to start the second half. Beginning at their own 34, it took only five plays for BGS to take the lead. Cowart dashed around the right side for 29 yards and another touchdown with 9:30 left in the third. The PAT failed but the Bucs lead 20-14.
Wayne Academy fumbled the kickoff return and Dray Killingsworth recovered for the Bucs at the Jaguars 49 yard line. Behind the running of Josiah Miller, Christian Williams and Cowart, BGS reached the end zone again. Cowart carried for six yards and a touchdown before Miller ran up the middle for a two point conversion. Bowling Green increased their lead to 28-14 with 5:27 remaining in the third.
The Jaguars scored their final points of the game on a 15 yard touchdown pass with 1:46 left in the third. The PAT cut the BGS lead to 28-21.
After both offenses stalled for a drive, the Bucs regained possession on their 38 yard line. Miller ripped off a 40 yard run on first down and a personal foul moved the ball to the 9. Cowart scored on the following play and Miller bulled ahead for a two point conversion with 9:54 remaining in the fourth. The Bucs led 36-21 which concluded the scoring.
Bowling Green’s running game and defense closed out the game on a high note for the Buccaneers.
“Very pleased with our effort, especially in the second half,” said Coach Phill Junkins. “We need to clean up some little things this week. We’re looking forward to this Friday and the chance to get above 500. Josiah and Kyron were great this week and the O line created a lot of space.”
Josiah Miller carried 30 times for 210 yards, Kyron Cowart had 185 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries with Christian Williams carrying 6 times for 44 yards.
This week the Bucs travel to Bay Springs, Mississippi for a non-district game against Sylva Bay Academy.
