The Franklinton Demons baseball team won a huge, dramatic game last Friday against Lakeshore, 1-0, to win the district co-championship in Coach Clay Tageant's first season as head coach. The Demons are currently 16-7 overall and finished 8-2 in district action. The Demons will qualify for the playoffs and are currently #13 in the power ratings, although that is likely to change before the brackets are released.
The Demons senior pitcher, Micah Wascom, got the start on the mound against Lakeshore in this all- important game.
The Titans threatened early in the first as they put two runners on with one out before one of the runners was picked off and Wascom struck the other out to end the threat.
No one threatened in the second but again the Titans got a runner on in the third but he was thrown out at second by DaRon Sinceno attempting to steal.
The Demons looked to score in the fourth with two runners on the corners and just one out. A line out to second and a quick throw to third catching the runner too far off the base ended the inning.
Neither team threatened in the fifth or sixth but the Titans again put runners on the corners in the seventh on a walk and a hit batter. But a timely strikeout ended that threat and inning.
The Demons went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and the game went into extra innings tied at 0-0.
The Titans went down in order in the top of the eighth before the Demons put a runner on when Dalton Freeman singled then made it to second on an error. Senior Rickken Burkhalter then doubled to right center allowing Freeman to score easily and end the game with the Demons winning 1-0.
Micah Wascom pitched the entire game, all seven innings of regulation and the extra inning, allowing just two hits, two walks and striking out eleven.
Offensively, the Demons batters had just three hits as Wascom had a single, Freeman had a single and Rickken Burkhalter had the game winning double.
