The Franklinton Demons baseball team faced off with the Poplarville Hornets last Thursday evening in Demon Diamond as part of the Demons baseball tournament. The Demons came into the game with a 7-2 record and the Hornets were coming in with a nice 10-1 record. Coach Jeff Tageant elected to start University of Southern Mississippi commitment Micah Wascom, a sophomore, on the mound for the Demons against the Hornets.
After the Hornets were sat down in order in the top of the first the Demons scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Tryson Fowler lead off the inning with a walk before moving to second on a balk. Micah Wascom then singled to put runners on the corner for Will Turner who singled in a run. Turner was thrown out at second while Wascom's courtesy runner scored. Banyan Penton drew a walk and also moved to second on a balk before scoring on Nathan Parden's single.
The Demons added another run in the second when Fowler drew another walk before scoring on Wascom's second single of the game.
The Demons kept the score at 4-0 in the third but scored their fifth in the fourth inning. Fowler singled, then stole second and moved to third when Wascom reached on an error. Turner walked to load the bases for Penton who also drew a walk to push across a run for a 5-0 Demons lead after four innings.
The Hornets scored a run in the sixth as they began the inning with a single and two bunt singles to load the bases. They scored a run on a fielder's choice before the Demons put down the uprising.
The Demons threatened in the sixth as they put two in scoring position but couldn't push any across. The Hornet managed a two out single in the top of the seventh but that was all and the Demons won 5-1.
Micah Wascom pitched a complete game, striking out ten batters, allowing only five hits, no walks and one hit batter.
Offensively the Demons were led by Wascom with two singles, Nathan Parden with two singles, Will Turner, Tryson Fowler and Rickken Burkhalter each with a single.
The Demons game with Walker was cancelled due to weather and the Demons fell to French Settlement on Saturday in an 8-6 game.
The Demons will face off with the Hannan Hawks on Friday March 18 at Coquille Park, then host Hannan for a double header on Saturday March 19. The Demons will travel to St Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday March 22.
