The Franklinton Junior High Falcons football team traveled to Covington to take on the St Paul's Wolves last Thursday in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Demon Stadium but moved due to poor field conditions. After a hard fought battle, the Falcons came away with a nice 16-14 victory over the Wolves.
The Falcons opened the game with an eight play, seventy yard drive that was capped off by a one yard run by quarterback Jayden Burkhalter. Chakyn McClain ran in the two point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
In the second quarter the Wolves responded with a touchdown on a six yard run. Their initial two point conversion was denied by the Falcons but a facemask penalty gave them another opportunity which the Wolves converted to tie the game at 8-8.
Later in the second period the Falcons used a nice eleven play drive, going seventy yards again to score. This drive ended when Avontez Brumfield scored from twenty two yards out with just over a minute left in the first half. Brumfield also ran in the two point conversion for a 16-8 lead which would be the score at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter but early in the fourth a Wolves drive was shut down at the Falcons 28. This began a very important series of events that determined the game outcome.
After the Falcons gained a first down, they fumbled the ball over to the Wolves at their own 42 with 3:10 left in the game.
The Wolves drove deep into Falcon's territory and had a fourth and goal at the Falcons four yard line. On the fourth down play the Wolves running back was hit hard at the one and the ball popped up into the air. A Wolves lineman caught the ball in midair and fell into the endzone for a touchdown with just 36 seconds left in the game. This made the score 16-14.
On the Wolves’ all important two point conversion attempt, the Falcons Avontez Brumfield blitzed from his safety position and hit the running back simultaneously as he was taking the snap from the quarterback, throwing him for a five yard loss. This allowed the Falcons to run out the clock and preserve the victory.
The Falcons will open their parish championship season on September 13 at home against the Mt Hermon Yellow Jackets.
