The Franklinton Demons football team scrimmaged the Kentwood Kangaroos last Thursday evening in Demon Stadium and came away with a "win" over the perennial playoff bound Kangaroos. While an official score was not kept the Demons scored six touchdowns to just two touchdowns for the Kangaroos in varsity action.
The scrimmage began with each team having opportunities from the ten yard line. The Demons scored when Jayden Burkhalter ran in from ten yards out, when Sy Austin ran in from ten yards out, when Jaiden Garrett caught a ten yard touchdown pass from Jacob Crain and when Austin ran in from the three yard line. Kentwood scored only once in their allotted plays on a ten yard run.
Next each team had a series of plays from their own thirty yard line. Franklinton used a nice, efficient drive to score when Austin went in from three yards. They also drove to the Kentwood 28 but ran out of plays there. Kentwood did not score during their allotted plays.
Finally, there was a timed "live" period between the two teams. During this period the Demons recovered a fumble then drove to the Kentwood twelve before turning the ball over at the three. On Kentwood's next drive Bryce Hall intercepted a pass for the Demons. The Demons then drove 78 yards to score when Conner Magee scored from 35 yards out on a quarterback run.
Kentwood got a score to end the scrimmage on a 33 yard quarterback run.
Coach Saltaformaggio was excited about his team's performance. "I thought our physicality was excellent. As with most early season scrimmages, we had assignment breakdowns, but we performed well. I thought that we showed major improvements from last season. Our best players performed well and some of our new players did things that make us a better football team. I'm excited about where this team can go. We have a big test again next week at Mandeville. Kentwood is an excellent football team, so going back to back against teams with that type of talent only gets you better."
The Demons’ junior quarterback Jacob Crain passed for 140 yards completing 10 of 13 passes with one interception. DaMikies McClain had three catches for 41 yards receiving, Conner Magee had two for 33, Sy Austin had two for 22, Dalton Freeman one for 12, Jaiden Garrett one for 21 and Jayden Burkhalter one for 18 yards.
Sy Austin rushed for 27 yards on 9 carries while Conner Magee rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown on 3 carries.
The Demons defense allowed 90 rushing yards on ten carries and 107 yards passing.
The Demons will go to Mandeville on August 30 for a jamboree against the Skippers.
