The Pine Raiders football team traveled to Slidell to face the Pope John Paul Jaguars in a controlled scrimmage last Friday evening. The Raiders came away with a "win" as they scored three touchdowns to the Jaguars two scores.
The two teams played a live ten minute period to begin the scrimmage. The Raiders went on offense first but fumbled the ball there giving the Jaguars a short field to work with. The Jaguars took advantage and scored on fourth down as their back went in from a yard out. The Raiders then scored on a seventy yard drive as Trey Knight passed to DJ Garrett for a five yard pass to cap off the drive. Pope John Paul then scored on a three yard run to go back ahead before the Raiders, with only :44 on the clock to begin their drive, scored when Knight again found Garrett for a 50 yard touchdown.
The two teams then had an eight minute period with the Jaguars receiving the ball first. The Raiders forced them to punt before driving for a score when Knight rushed into the end zone from 24 yards out as time expired.
Coach Bradley Seal was pleased with his team's showing but saw things to be fixed. "Offensively our first drive we looked a little sloppy with penalties and a bad snap. After that I was pleased with our offense. We scored on all three of our drives and had another long touchdown called back. Defensively against the run I thought we played ok besides one missed tackle. We had a couple young defensive backs that got lost in coverage and we have to clean that up. Next week we need to clean up the penalties on offense and play with more consistency on defense."
In the JV portion of the scrimmage, Cooper Thomas passed to Tyre Benard for a ten yard touchdown that gave the JV Raiders a win.
Raiders quarterback Trey Knight was 6 of 7 passing for 95 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown on 4 carries. DJ Garrett caught four passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns, Zachary Thomas caught one for 11 yards and Thomas Bernard caught one for 15 yards. Thomas Bernard rushed twice for 32 yards, Gary Brumfield had two carries for 13 yards, Von Johnson had two carries for 23 yards and Brady Ryals has one rush for one yard.
The Raiders will play in the Northlake jamboree on August 30.
