Parish Playoff Picture - This week we'll continue looking at the playoff picture for the four parish teams with two weeks to go before the playoffs.
Franklinton actually moved up a spot to #25 despite their loss to Salmen. They cannot count on that this week though and desperately need to win their game with Pearl River. First to keep from falling completely out of the top 32 or so low they will have to play one of the top two or three teams in the first round. Secondly to improve their power rating and have the possibility of a winnable game in the first round and a second round home game.
Bogalusa moved up to #15 and has a winnable game with Loranger this week. A win should secure them a home first round game while a loss would likely put them on the road in the first round. Playoffs are locked in though as they are the district champions.
Pine fell to #15 and also has a winnable game against Varnado. Like Bogalusa a win should secure a home first round game while a loss would likely put them on the road but the playoffs are a lock.
Varnado is at #41 and are in a bad spot. An upset of Pine would be good but would probably not put them in the playoffs.
Notes and Quotes
Amite has had their first two victories of the season overturned by the LHSAA for use of an ineligible player. This gives them two losses on the season and also effects all of their opponents power ratings as well.
"We knew going in it was going to be a dog fight, they are a very good defensive team. We had a big special teams play that kept us in it at the end of the first half. We didn't get critical third down stops early in the third quarter and that allowed them to pull away from us. There were some opportunities for us to make some plays on offense, but we just didn't make the plays. It's disappointing for our seniors, because I know how bad they wanted this one. We have another tough test this week as we will look to rebound quickly and improve our playoff positioning." Franklinton head football coach Jonathon Barber
"Amite is a really good team. I thought we started the game well but they wore us down and we started turning the ball over. We need to move on. Varnado is a big game for us and a win gives us a chance to host a playoff game." Pine head football coach Bradley Seal
"We gave up some big plays defensively in the first half that hurt. Our quarterback hurt in the second quarter and it took a little while to adjust without him. The second half we made some adjustments defensively which I though was good and our offense had a chance to adjust at halftime without our quarterback and came out played well but we had just fell too far behind. Our kids played hard though. They showed a lot of heart." Varnado head football coach Adam Brumfield
"Our kids grew up last night and showed so much grit! Down 14 twice and late in the game and tied it up with 45 seconds to get into overtime where my guys finished, and on the road in a hostile environment. I could not be more proud of this team and these young men. Very exciting time to be a part of Denham Springs football." Denham Springs head football coach Brett Beard
"This is the best Hammond team we have seen in quite some time. Coach Buckels is doing a great job over there of getting those young men out and getting them to play their tails off! For the first time this season we had some breaks go our way. We played tough, but made far too many mistakes to win a game of that fashion. Fortunately, sometimes the ball bounces your way and you walk away with an ugly win. That was most certainly the case for us last night. We'll make the corrections and move on to Covington." Mandeville head football coach Hutch Gonzales
"Last night was an early playoff game. A game you have to win if you want to get in post district playoffs. I was very proud of both teams last night. Their guys and our guys never quit. You had to play hard for four quarters. They all did. We were fortunate to come out on top. Both teams have great athletes and both teams played their hearts out. The intensity of the game was electric. Emotions ran high. That's was football is all about! This week we have another very important game. St Helena is coming to Indy. Both teams looking for power points to get into the playoffs. We'll be ready. Go Tigers!" Independence head football coach Scott Shaffett
"Our defense led by Ashton Wilson and Jmarion Dunomes played lights out limiting Pine's rushing attack and forcing four turnovers! Simeon Powell, Ashton Wilson and Keith Harris all had interceptions or fumble recoveries. Offensively we rushed for almost 400 yards paced by Brennan Harrell. Big game this coming Friday versus Kentwood for our senior night!" Amite head football coach Zephaniah Powell
