Summertime! Summertime!
Can you believe it is already August? Washington Parish School will begin the 2026-2027 new school year tomorrow, August 6th. Our summer vacation went by like a whirlwind.
I attended the Watermelon Festival back in July. It was great seeing folks I don't see often. It was nice to meet some of the queens. I had a brief visit with Jr. Miss Washington Parish Watermelon Festival winner Rain Ruffino and her mom Season.
Speaking of the Watermelon Festival, my dad would plant acres of watermelons every year. After they started growing, our job would be turning the vines so dad could plow around them. When they were ripe, dad would go pull the melons and when we were finished with the milking, my sister Lorell and I would carry them out to the end of the patch where we would load them up in our little red pick-up truck.
Before we were finished, we would purposefully drop one. Sitting in the field, we would eat our fill. It always tasted so good. By the time we had our fill, the watermelon juice was running down our arms.
When dad saw the busted one, he would ask, "What happened here?" Our answer was it was heavy and we accidentally dropped it. He knew better.
When the melons were loaded, dad would go to town where he sold them. Everyone looked forward to Saturday morning. Especially the kids. When they saw him coming down the street they would say loudly, "Here comes Mr. Clifford." If they didn't have any money, dad would give them one. They were so happy. Back then, a big melon only cost about $2. Every Saturday morning, this was our job as long as the watermelons lasted.

Howard Jones of Lake Charles recently spent several days visiting with his family. During this time, he enjoyed time spent with his brother Larry and sisters Evelyn and Marilyn. By the way, he is having some health problems and is not able to drive. Remember him in your prayers. I'm sure he would appreciate it.
