The Franklinton Junior High Falcons defeated the Pine Junior High Raiders 27-8 as Avantez Brumfield scored three of the four Falcons touchdowns. The win gives The Falcons and head coach Andy Creel a perfect 9-0 season and the Washington Parish Junior High championship.
The Falcons offense scored almost 30 points per game this season and the starting defense gave up less than 3 points per game, allowing just three scores this season.
Falcons head coach Andy Creel couldn't say enough good things about his team. "This group of young men are special! One of the best classes to come through here in my eighteen years at FJHS. Happy for our kids and happy for our school. Great group of young men and assistant coaches."
In the championship game with Pine the Falcons scored first as they used runs of 12, 16, 13 and 11 yards before quarterback Jayden Burkhalter found Chakyn McClain for a 24 yard touchdown reception. Austin Barbers extra point was good and the Falcons were up 7-0 with 5:47 left in the first period.
The Falcons recovered a fumble on the Raiders next drive and scored on a 79 yard run by Avantez Brumfield but it was called back for holding. After the teams traded punts Brumfield caught a 59 yard pass from Burkhalter to put the Falcons up 14-0 with 2:25 left in the first half. Brumfield intercepted a pass on the Raiders ensuing possession and then ripped off a 51 yard run to put the Falcons up 21-0 with 1:58 left in the first half.
The Raiders had possession first in the second half and drove 60 yards for a score on a pass from Cooper Thomas to Brayden Bickham from 12 yards out. Their two point conversion was successful and they had cut the score to 21-8.
The Falcons answered on their ensuing drive as they drove to the 28 yard line then Brumfield broke off another nice run of 28 yards to make the score 27-8 with 1:57 left in the third after the extra point was no good.
The Raiders turned the ball over on downs at their own 47 and the Falcons drove to the Raiders nine yard line but the drive bogged down with penalties and they turned the ball back over to the Raiders at 14. The Raiders couldn't move the ball and punted with less than a minute left in the game and the Falcons ran out the time to preserve the win.
The Falcons had 234 yards rushing on 16 attempts with Avantez Brumfield having 12 carries for 211 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Nigel Cole had 3 carries for 10 yards and Tyler Magee had 1 for 13. Falcons quarterback Jayden Burkhalter was 3 of 7 passing for 96 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. The Falcons were penalized 7 times for 50 yards. Pine had 106 yards rushing on 25 attempts and were 2 of 3 passing for 22 yards and one touchdown. The Raiders were penalized 6 times for 40 yards.
