The Franklinton Demons football team took one on the chin last Friday as they fell to Fontainebleu in a heartbreaker, 22-21. The Demons’ record now stands at 1-2 on the season. The Demons will travel to Denham Springs this Friday. The Yellow Jackets got by the Demons last season 26-20.
Demons coach Nick Saltaformaggio said the Bulldogs made the plays when the Demons couldn't. "Just the way it unfolded, you could make a bunch of excuses. We're really beat up. We're starting to get a little overwhelmed with injuries. But at the end of the day we couldn't make a play to end the game and they made a play to win the game. That's it in a nutshell. Fourth and ten we couldn't get off the field on defense and run the clock out. We couldn't make the play on fourth and ten that they made to win the game. That's just the way it went. We have to lean on our resiliency and keep on fighting. Nobody is in or out of the playoffs after week three. We're going to keep doing what we do and at the end of the day we'll be where we'll be. We'll be in it or out of it, right now I think we're in it and I think we're going to be a really good football team. But, right now there is still work to do."
Coach Salt spoke of Denham Springs, the Demons’ upcoming opponent. "Denham Springs is going to be a tough out for us, they are a 5A school, they're big and they were a quarterfinal team last year."
The Bulldogs got on the board first when they went in from seventeen yards out late in the first quarter. The Demons answered on their ensuing possession as Jacob Crain passed to Conner Magee for a 67 yard touchdown and a 7-7 score.
That score would hold for the entire second period and third period until the Bulldogs broke a 49 yard run with 9:20 left in the game to go up 14-7. The Demons again answered as they drove the length of the field to score when Micah Hart ran in from three yards. The Demons elected to go for the two point conversion but a bobbled snap ended that threat and the Demons trailed 14-13.
The Demons recovered a fumble on the Bulldogs next drive to give them the ball at the Bulldogs 16. Magee scored from nine yards out to put the Demons up 21-14 as he also scored the two point conversion.
With just over two minutes left the Bulldogs began passing and faced a fourth and ten at their own 31. They completed a pass and the receiver raced 69 yards for a touchdown. The Demons were offsides before the extra point kick and the Bulldogs then elected to go for the two point conversion, which was just barely good to put them up 22-21.
The Demons moved to midfield but an interception ended the drive and sealed the game for the Bulldogs.
The Demons sophomore quarterback Jacob Crain passed twelve times completing 8 for 109 yards with a touchdown and an interception and rushed for 17 yards. Conner Magee was the leading receiver with 97 yards and a touchdown on six receptions and Michael Brock caught three for 12 yards. Rayshone Manuel was the leading rusher with 104 yards on 21 carries, Micah Hart had 9 carries for 49 yards, Conner Magee had 34 yards and a touchdown on 6 carries and Sy Austin had 5 carries for 21 yards.
