The Franklinton Demons football team travelled to New Orleans to play the Newman Greenies in a controlled spring scrimmage. The Greenies "won" as they scored three times to the Demons two.
The two teams swapped back and forth in twelve play series from their own thirty with Newman going first. The Greenies scored after a long drive on a seven yard run. The Demons answered with a sustained drive that Rayshon Manuel capped off with a three yard run.
The Greenies then scored on a 25 yard draw play before the Demons answered with another long drive that Micah Hart scored a one yard touchdown to end.
Newman then scored on a ten yard pass leaving the Demons an opportunity to tie the scrimmage. The Demons drove inside the Greenies ten yard line before the back slipped on the wet turf on fourth down, failing to gain enough to sustain the drive.
In second team action, Demons back Sy Austin scored on a nice 54 yard run that brought the crowd to their feet.
Coach Saltaformaggio saw some things that needed improvement but was overall pleased with the work from his team.
"I thought offensively we played really well. It's like I told them (the team) there's nobody on our schedule that's going to be better than them. They have been in the semifinals multiple times in a row and Nelson and his staff do a great job. I wanted to see us compete, I felt offensively we competed. I think defensively we have a long, long way to go but we have a long time to get there. We have to work hard in the summer. We had the right call to make it a three - three scrimmage, ones on ones against that football team. So, I'm really, really pleased with how we played. You're never pleased with the result, even though it's a scrimmage, you go home and you count they had three scores and we had two scores. But I'm very happy with how we played offensively and defensively we're going to have to figure out where we're going to go and we'll figure that out during the course of the summer."
Conner Magee passed five times completing four for 44 yards and rushed ten times for 72 yards. Rayshon Manuel rushed 9 times for 55 yards and a touchdown. Micah Hart had 4 carries for 24 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 26 yards.
