The Franklinton Demons football team dropped a game against the 5A Denham Springs Yellow Jackets last Friday on the road, 53-28. The loss drops the Demons record to 1-3 on the season with one game to go before district action begins.
The Demons will travel to Belle Chasse to take on the 2-1 Cardinal this Friday. The Demons defeated them 24-17 last season at home.
The Yellow Jackets scored on their first offensive play then added to it later in the first period for a 13-0 lead. They scored a third time to push the score to 20-0 in the first quarter. After a back and forth battle for most of the second the Yellow Jackets scored again to push the score to 27-0.
The Demons offense came to life late in the half as Jacob Crain found a streaking Conner Magee down the left side line for a 33 yard touchdown pass to make the score 27-7 at the halftime.
The Yellow Jackets picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown and a 34-7 score. The Demons answered with a nice drive that was capped off with a 13 yard touchdown reception by Magee for a 34-14 score. Denham Springs scored on their next two possessions to push the score to 47-14 before the Demons again went to Magee for a 67 yard touchdown reception from Crain. The Yellow Jackets returned the kickoff for a touchdown and a 53-21 score.
The Demons offense then drove to the Yellow Jacket 25 before turning the ball over on downs there. They scored on their next possession as Sy Austin ripped off a 36 yard run with 2:51 left in the game and a 53-28 score, which would be the final.
Coach Saltaformaggio was disappointed but glad to be getting to the part of the schedule where the Demons are in their own weight class. "We were outmanned tonight, just from the get go they overwhelmed us. And we have to figure it out. I don't think we are as bad as the score but we're probably not as good as the team that beat Covington either. Somewhere in the middle lies the truth. You have to find a way to win the games you're supposed to win, that's why last week's loss hurts. I knew this was going to be a tough out no matter what. So now we have six games left against opponents that are our size, that have our talent level and just figure out if we can get through it. We've got to find another guy besides Conner Magee, we're going to run out of gas with him if we don't find somebody else. But our kids work hard and I'm happy, I'm proud and I'm honored to be the coach at Franklinton. I vowed that we would get it fixed but it's probably going to take a little bit longer than people thought it would."
Demons sophomore quarterback Jacob Crain passed for 220 yards completing eleven of eighteen with three touchdowns with one interception. Conner Magee caught five passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Brock caught 3 for 56 yards and Sy Austin caught two for 28 yards.
Sy Austin was the leading rusher with 65 yards and a touchdown on ten carries, Rayshone Manuel rushed 15 times for 60 yards, Conner Magee three times for ten yards and Crain rushed once for one yard. Skyler Williams had two interceptions for the Demons defense. Santiago Morales was 4 of 4 on extra point kicks.
