Local and area high school football teams held their spring scrimmages last week. The coaches had an opportunity to evaluate their players and see strengths and weaknesses of their respective team. I polled the coaches on their thoughts on their team's performance during the spring practice and game. Here are their responses.
"We have a lot of growing to do. We have the players to be excellent again. Our youth on the offensive line showed last night. The summer will be very important for us. We won the scrimmage part 1-0. Hammond won the quarter 3-0."
--- Franklinton head football coach Nick Saltaformaggio
"Won 35-21 with the starters and 14-0 with junior varsity. I was happy with what we accomplished this spring. It was a good step for our team but it's just the first step. We need to have a good summer but I do like where our team is right now."
--- Pine head football coach Bradley Seal
"We did an intersquad scrimmage which was pretty even. Our offense scored twice but our defense held strong for the rest of the scrimmage. Standouts offensively were Lajahren Cyprian, Braylen Taylor, Jamyron Dillon, Braylon Tate, Jaylen Haywood and Vincent Wilson. Defensive Standouts were Osvaldo Razo, Cam Madison, Alijah Williams, Frank Morgan Jr and Cedric Burise. Coming out of spring our biggest thing is building depth along the offensive/defensive lines. Quarterback development/competition will go thru summer into fall camp until we can settle on one guy. But overall got out of spring healthy only one injury."
---Amite head football coach Zephaniah Powell
"Really pleased with how we competed and tackled, in spring you love to see the offseason played out in spring ball and if your attitude and nastiness has increased with your gains in the weight room and in return you get a more confident, better player, so they have to prove that and I loved what I saw from that standpoint, a lot of growth. Once we clean up the selfish penalties and mistakes our boys have a chance to play a really exciting brand of football, and I can't wait to watch them in the fall already.
